Fresno police investigate 2 separate deadly shootings

FRESNO, Calif.

The first happened near Hawes and Arthur avenues in Southwest Fresno around midnight Sunday. Officers found Jason Rooters, 28, in the driver's seat of a Chevrolet Avalanche with gunshot wounds to his head and upper body. He later died at the hospital.

Investigators learned a 20-year-old man was also shot in the SUV, and was being driven to Community Regional Medical Center. A Ford Mustang dropped him off and then sped away. Police arrested the driver after a short pursuit.

Detectives are still searching for the shooting suspect, and they say the second victim is now recovering.

The other homicide occurred just after 10 p.m. Saturday at Mayfair Drive and Normal Avenue in Central Fresno. Police say a 23-year-old man was shot at least twice and died about four hours later at the hospital.

Witnesses reported seeing a white or light gray Chrysler 300 pull up to the victim before one of the passengers got out and opened fire. Police are still trying to find the suspects and their sedan. Authorities believe this was a gang-related shooting.

Anyone with information on either of these cases is asked to contact the Fresno Police Department at (559) 621-7000.
