Blaze rips through Downtown Fresno apartment

FRESNO, Calif.

An off-duty firefighter recorded video of the flames shooting out of a second-story unit at F and Tulare. The blaze started around 11 a.m. Saturday.

The first crew arrived in just minutes and quickly called for extra resources to help get everyone out of the building safely.

"This is actually one of the worst nightmares really that we could ask for as a fire department because the type of unit that we have is an apartment that sits over the top of a business; we have multiple apartments above there, narrow hallways," said Battalion Chief Chuck Tobias with the Fresno Fire Department.

Firefighters used a balcony in the back of the building to evacuate everyone. They say one unit was destroyed, and others have smoke and water damage, but no one was injured.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
