Carjacking suspect dies after being shot by CHP officer in Madera County, authorities say

MADERA COUNTY (KFSN) -- A carjacking suspect is dead after being shot by a California Highway Patrol officer in Madera County Sunday, authorities said.

The shooting happened near Avenue 12 and Highway 41 around 2:30 p.m. at the Branch and Vine Event Venue. The Madera County Sheriff's Office says three armed men threatened a person and stole their car.

Responding officers found the stolen car had crashed near the area, and the suspects fled the scene. A CHP officer caught up with one suspect and confronted him. Investigators say the officer felt threatened by the suspect and fired, killing him.

No weapon was found on the suspect, and the two other suspected carjackers were arrested.

"Life seems to be getting crazier and crazier, but I'm happy no innocent people were hurt after being put at risk, even after the initial carjacking," Madera County Sheriff Jay Varney said.

Authorities are in the area investigating.
