FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- A Fresno recycling company was poised to take a bite out of the big apple.
After the New Year, Electronic Recyclers International will handle eWaste for all of New York City.
ERI began taking apart and shredding electronic equipment in 2005.
But the Fresno-based company has now secured a contract with New York City to recycle all of its electronic waste.
The deal has put CEO John Shegerian in a humorous mood.
Shegerian said, "It's really big. It's like that old Sinatra song. If you can recycle there you can recycle anywhere."
Shegerian talked to us from New York.
In January, residents there can be fined $100 if they're caught improperly disposing of computers, TVs and other electronics.
Shegerian explained, "It's such a vertical city. It was never set up to be a recycling city so this is very, very unique."
Electronic Recyclers International now operates eight recycling centers around the country with over 1,100 employees.
Shegerian said ERI is the largest electronic waste recycling brand in the world.
"I envisioned having a nice place in Fresno, California providing nice jobs in Fresno and never dreamed it would be this massive so soon."
The company has contracted with 150 cities from Los Angeles to NYC.
