Dollar General store coming to Planada
A small North Valley community is now getting its first large chain store.

PLANADA, Calif. (KFSN) -- A small North Valley community is now getting its first large chain store.

The scenic drive to Yosemite on Highway 140 now includes a new sight in Planada. A more than 7,000-square-foot Dollar General is under construction in this rural farming community. It's expected to serve tourists and local residents alike.

"The store is going to be wonderful here in Planada because there's so many people who always have to go all the way to Merced to buy their needs," said Planada resident Matha Flores.

Right now, this area has a handful of small markets, but no chain stores. Dollar General calls itself the nation's largest small-box discount retailer. It has more than 11,000 locations in 40 states, including one in Merced.

The new store will offer everything from cleaning supplies and beauty products to over-the-counter medicine. The owner of nearby San Joaquin Drug says he may adjust his inventory as a result.

"We'll probably change a little bit of our mix, get rid of some of the less expensive lower-end stuff and maybe upscale it a little bit, so the competition is good overall I think," said Mike Bass.

The Dollar General will also sell food, including milk, cheese and eggs. The owners of local markets say they are concerned about losing a portion of their profits, but are hoping their fresh meat and produce will keep customers coming.

"I understand some people don't like change, but when you go into an unincorporated community and you're starting to see stores come over there, I think that's a good story and a good fit," said Merced County Supervisor John Pedrozo.

The new store will employ about six to 10 people. It's scheduled to open in February.
