Competitors work tirelessly to design and build floats for Rose Parade

Whether you're a fan of football or flowers, Pasadena will mark the new year with the must-watch competition.

The Oklahoma Sooners face off against the Georgia Bulldogs on the football field but it's the International Lions on the parade route that you'll want to cheer for.

The 129th annual Tournament of Roses Parade will showcase dozens of flower-covered floats but one, in particular, has roots in the Valley.

Lemoore's Kevin Patel and family are headed south to see their hard work roll down the 5 1/2 mile parade route.

They along with 250 volunteers from throughout California have spent the last year piecing together the International Lions Club float.

Their theme, "preserving our environment" which is created with all natural materials.

"Flax seeds, Indian seeds rye, lentils edible stuff out there they put it on the float," Falguni Patel said. "Whatever flower pedals they don't use they crush them and they use the dye."

In line with their message, nothing goes wasted.

In addition to the 700,000 people lining the parade route close to 52-million are expected to watch from home.

"We do have fun but at the same time we're putting all of our service hands together to help and represent our motto which is we serve," Patel said.

There are 46,000 Lions Clubs worldwide.

In addition to protecting our environment, Lions Clubs work to address global hunger, diabetes, pediatric cancer and various issues within their local communities.
