New display at the Big Fresno Fair helping fair goers understand our past while paying tribute to veterans

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- The Big Fresno Fair is not just all about carnival rides and deep-fried food. Organizers work hard every year to bring an educational value for fairgoers. One of the newest additions in 2017 is the veterans display inside the history of Fresno Museum.

"We wouldn't have a museum without a veteran's exhibit in here because they are so important to our history to our country and our community," said Big Fresno Fair CEO John Alkire.

Together in a partnership with the downtown Fresno Veteran's Memorial Museum -- the Big Fresno Fair has set up this permanent display -- depicting six local World War II veterans in their correct military uniforms with photos of them--then and now.

"It was quite a surprise-- I didn't expect it would be displayed at the Fresno County Fair," said World War II veteran Ray Lee.

"I feel honored to be with my buddies to be with them."

No one appreciates the exhibit more than the veterans themselves and they were in attendance Monday for the official opening of the display. The six men -- all now in their 90's -- still volunteer at the Veterans Memorial Museum in downtown Fresno.

"I really enjoy working down there. It's been a real pleasure--meet a lot of nice people and get a lot of congratulations for our service," said World War II veteran Bill Biggers.

The men spent the day swapping stories while meeting curious fairgoers who wanted to learn more--a perfect day to memorialize the greatest generation.

"It's an honor really. I feel fortunate enough at my age. I've lived long enough to see this," said World War II veteran Les Traeger.
