Driver dead after a police pursuit in Atwater

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- The chase ended at Highway 99 near Winton Parkway in Atwater. Police say the vehicle was speeding when the driver lost control and went off the highway. The vehicle struck a tree and landed in a ditch.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say the chase started at 10:30 Wednesday morning when police officers tried to stop the vehicle in the area of Buhach Road and Bellevue Road in Atwater and the vehicle failed to yield.

The California Highway Patrol is investigating the incident.
