Clovis students receive up-close lesson on the dangers of drunk driving

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- In a stunning reminder of the dangers of drinking and driving, students at Clovis East High School watched the emergency response to a staged accident where multiple people died.

The California Highway Patrol and several other agencies present the Every 15 minutes program each spring as a way to remind students that every 15 minutes someone is killed in a drunk driving crash.

The re-enactments include a death notification to parents plus the arrest of a student who plays the part of the drunk driver.

"The whole point is to demonstrate the reality it's not what you see on TV," John Weaver with the program said. "It's not what you see in the movies, death as a result of drunk driving is a reality and we're bringing that reality."

The re-enactment also includes a character dressed as the Grim Reaper.

The program also includes a mock funeral and a special guest speaker from Mothers Against Drunk Driving.
