Fresno State students get access to professional clothing

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Fresno State has a new tool for its students who are looking for professional clothes but don't necessarily have the money to buy them.

Faculty, staff and students celebrated the grand opening of Fresno State's new Professional Student Closet. Inside students went through each rack of clothing all donated by community members looking to give their old professional clothes new life.

"We were receiving a lot of phone calls from the local community that they were maybe retiring or they were going through their closet," said Debbie Young with the Fresno State Career Development Center. "They had professional clothing and they were hoping to donate it to a cause."

They knew Fresno State students on the brink of entering the professional world would probably be in need of some office attire. Normally, work clothes don't always come cheap. These items, are free to Fresno State students. President Castro and his wife even donated items.

"This is another way the community is coming together to show we support you we believe in you and we want you to be successful," Mary G. Castro said.

"This is really nice for the school to have and I'm so grateful to have this opportunity," student Megan Amon said.

Amon rushed over to the student closet as soon as she heard about the grand opening. The junior tried on a number of items and says she's in need of professional clothes for job interviews.

The closet doesn't just have clothes, there's also shoes, jewelry and even ties. Students can take three main clothes items and an unlimited amount of everything else.

"I know a lot of students have come back to tell us they wore the suit and they got the job or they were able to secure an interview," Young said.

"My suit definitely for more job interviews or working going to events or even just coming to the office I know we do get some employers here so it's a lot nicer if you do wear a suit plus it makes you feel better," student Jose Alex Rodriguez said.

Fresno State's Student Closet is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Professional Development Center.
