Rapid growth in Central Unified has administrators looking at new boundary changes

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Overcrowding at elementary schools has Central Unified officials drawing up some new school boundary maps. Superintendent Mark Sutton said some schools like River Bluff and Polk Elementary have more than 900 students.

"We're making some adjustments. We have a couple elementary schools that are really large right now, and that will allow us to take a few students out of that school and make them a little bit more reasonable."

The changes will also allow the district to carry on its mission of creating neighborhood schools. Giving a sense of community to the people who live in each school area.

"The whole idea is if it's in your walking distance you can walk there on the weekends and be in the yard and, you know, own that school and really look after that school too," said Sutton.

Tilley Elementary will be the most affected. As the district's newest school it's mostly been used as an overflow site. Bussing kids from other overcrowded schools.

"It'll be nice for us, we'll see all of the kids in the neighborhood walking through more of the street," said Audra Barbosa, parent.

Central Unified has already had six community meetings about the boundary changes.

The school board will vote on them on May 10th.
