FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Several Central Valley student athletes were recognized Monday night on behalf of the Junior League of Fresno.

Twenty-two young women attended the 34th annual Senior Girl Athlete Awards Banquet. Each girl was recognized for their hard work as athletes, students, and their involvement in their communities.

Action News reporter Amanda Venegas served as the mistress of ceremonies, and the keynote speaker was Chantea McIntyre. She played basketball for Fresno State and was crowned Mrs. California last year.

Organizers say this event is special because it not only recognizes what these students have accomplished but looks forward to what they will do in the future.

"It is celebrating their hard work, and it's really celebrating where they're going to be going. That's really what this is about is honoring where they are going to be moving on to, and hopefully they're going to be coming back to the community and giving back to the community, and we have invested in their futures," Junior League of Fresno President Lindsay Callahan said.

Monday night's grand prize scholarship winner was Emily Imfeld of Sanger High School. She's a water polo player and swimmer who is involved with 4-H, student government, and has a GPA higher than a 4.0.
