ARLINGTON, MA -- A Massachusetts babysitter is facing charges after police say she was found with a child while drunk and on drugs.

Police say Susan Devereaux was stumbling down the street drunk and high while babysitting a 3-year-old boy, station WCVB reports.

Arlington Police Capt. Richard Flynn said, "We found several empty containers in a motor vehicle."

A surprised neighbor called police who came to bring the boy back to his mother.

The family says they hired the 51-year-old woman from babysitting website Care.com starting in the spring.

Other nannies are appalled by the allegations and they know how much work it takes to look after a toddler.

Nanny Jillian Gauvin said, "I was hired on a website like that. It kind of makes us look bad. We're not all like that. ... They're counting on you. You have to be the dependable one."

Police say Devereaux has been arrested before for motor vehicle violations and for receiving stolen property. Now, she'll face a judge on reckless endangerment charges.

Police say it's a lesson that parents need to do their homework when they're hiring help.

Flynn said, "When you go to hire someone to watch your children or provide care, for whoever that may be, we ask you to do your due diligence...a website or a referral from one person isn't enough."

The Arlington Police Department filed a mandatory report with the Department of Children and Families, and after consulting with DCF, authorities decided to file charges.

Devereaux will be arraigned later in Cambridge District Court.
