Families in southwest Fresno are heading to the school gym for a brand new program that promotes fitness and a sense of community.

Students and parents are working up a sweat at West Fresno Middle School's gym. From learning new dance moves to intense interval training, the families are feeling great while taking part in a brand new program called No Walls Gym.

Created by Kids Moving, Inc, the grant-funded workouts are new this school year to three schools in the Washington Union School District in southwest Fresno. "There's no gyms out here so we got together with some parents and kids moving, so we got this club-- so now we offer classes before school, after school for enrichment," said Lucio Cortez, principal.

The free fitness classes are for parents, students, and the rest of the family to participate in together. Instructors try to make the classes fun for students and their parents, using hula hoops, dance music, and even these fluffalos. "The fluffalos are great. It's a way to have fun and not get hurt," said Nicholas Perez, PE specialist.

Having fun while getting in a workout is the main focus here and principal Cortez said the program is getting families more involved at school, and even improving attendance and student participation in class. "Especially those students who need to release that energy-- their behavior has really improved due to the no walls gym."

"I think it's really good. I think it helps our parents and it's really fun because you get to bring the kids," said Ana Esquivel, student.

Fifth grade Ana Esquivel said she loves being able to spend time with her mom doing something fun outside of school. "Because it's fun, and it's a lot of activities for the kids-- and it's free," said Maria Fajarto, parent.

"To provide a no cost gym-- and a way to workout and build friendships and have a great community environment is awesome," said Perez.

Organizers said the program has been so successful. They're hoping to expand it to more schools in the district.
