Costco black pepper recalled over salmonella concerns

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Thousands of jars of Costco brand black pepper are being recalled due to potential salmonella contamination.

The Kirkland Signature Coarse Ground Malabar Black Pepper was sold at Costco stores nationwide between April 4 and June 4. The affected 12.7 oz. plastic jars have a Best Before date of 03/2017 and Lot #: OT 065099, OT 065169, OT 065254, OT 065255, OT 065256 and OT 065284.

Automated phone calls have already warned about 130,000 club members about the issue. The bacterium was discovered during a routine federal Food and Drug Administration sampling of the product.

Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children and the elderly.
