Shaved heads show support for Fresno officer

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- For members of the Fresno Police Department it was a small sacrifice. A show of solidarity. Over 100 people decided to "Shave for Edgar." The clippers helped create the noon-time buzz. Off came the locks for the love of a colleague.

Detective Edgar Valle Sandoval is fighting stage four pancreatic cancer. He has started radiation treatment. Edgar was moved by the sight of his friends getting their heads shaved.

Valle Sandoval explained, "This is my foundation. This is what makes me wake up every day and say okay today. One fight. This is where my strength lies."

Ken Katz came just to show support but ended up going bald as well. "You know what, I think we draw strength from him. He's just amazing. An inspiration."

They all lined up with hair including Diana Trueba but that would quickly change once they got into the chair. Diana drew the biggest crowd.

Trueba said, "We here at the Fresno Police Department are family and we think of ways to help Edgar at his time of need."

Valle Sandoval said, "When I got up and walked to her I said this is what makes me strong."

Chief Jerry Dyer enjoyed watching everyone take a lot off the top and sides.

Dyer said, "Edgar's one of those guys that has always been there for us and now to see this many people do something for him and his family it's touching."

The carefully combed hair was no match for Edgar and his clippers. He joined the barbers who volunteered their time.

Dyer said, "I'm just glad to see that all of these officers finally realize this is the right look."

The department has also started a Go Fund Me account to help Edgar's family pay for expenses.
