Hundreds receive drought gardening advice at Fresno State

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- As we deal with the drought, gardeners are taking steps to save water.

The city of Fresno held its Water-Wise Plant Give and Take at Fresno State Saturday morning.

Organizers say people use about 60 percent of their water on their landscaping, so the exchange is designed to get drought-resistant plants onto yards.

"Gardeners are notorious for having a lot of plants in their gardens," Nora Laikam with Fresno Water Conservation said. "They don't always want to throw away. They want to give away. So, we've had well over 150 people bring plants today to share with other folks."

About 700 people attended the event and, aside from free water-wise plants, they also got advice on how to keep their lawns green with less water, or how to go to a fully drought-resistant landscape.
