Hurricane Harvey victims in crucial need, local company says they are shipping donations to Houston for free

Fresno, Calif. (KFSN) -- Houston can use all the help they need right now and fundraising efforts in Fresno are underway.

School is back in session but students are not just learning arithmetic. They're formulating plans and have figured out a way to help Hurricane Harvey victims.

"I'm going to be helping get the donations ready and care packages and stuff like that," said Mariah Rios, high school junior.

Roosevelt High School is one spot opening its doors for donations and students are taking the lead with their English teacher to make the school a drop off site, and gather goods from their peers.

"I want them to be civic activists, I want them to be engaging with the world and people around them other than themselves to just help when they see someone in need--be empathetic," said Jamillah Finley, English teacher.

They are looking for gently used clothing, diapers, wipes, formula, full-sized toiletries and non-perishable food items. Students are even talking about including inspirational messages in care packages.

"I hope we can get as much stuff to help as many people as we can," said Rios.

The Meathead Movers moving company is also lending a helping hand-they are asking for similar items--but are requiring anything donated to be brand new. The meathead movers say next week. They are driving all donations down to Houston themselves.

"We looked at it as an opportunity to stand forces join forces with the rest of the nation and help where people are in need," said Justin Pieper, operations manager.
