Fresno, Calif. (KFSN) -- A Los Banos man is dead after family members say he was brutally murdered behind his home.

Authorities identified the victim as Delbert Scoggins--one family member says Scoggins was asleep outside when it happened.

"My brother's who's the one that found him was that someone stabbed him through the back, and it went through his stomach and then slit his throat--they covered him with boards and blankets," said Christopher Brown, family member.

Police say it happened on the 600 block of 8th Street on Wednesday afternoon. They say first responders did what they could, but Scoggins died at the scene.

Chief Gary Brizee says he spoke with the victim's mother. He says they do not know the motive for the attack but say they are investigating all avenues.

"I feel terrible for her and her family and we're going to do all we can to bring justice to her and her son," said Brizee.

Scoggin's family believes the murder was planned.

"They went after only DJ though--they had a chance to get anybody here," said Brown.

They say while Scoggins had some personal problems. He was caring and kind to anyone he met. Some family members want justice--others are just hoping for peace.

"He wants to celebrate his life, not struggle over it--I can guarantee that," said Brown.
