CLOVIS, Calif. (KFSN) -- The Department of Housing and Community Development is helping mobile homeowners take full control of their property. They are doing this by properly registering their homes and waiving past due registration fees and taxes. This is all part of the state program Register Your Mobile Home California.

"This program actually gives people a clean slate it wipes out most of those taxes and fees in the hopes that they will stay on our roles and move forward in paying our registration and taxes in the future," said Natasha Stanford Analyst for the Department of Housing and Community Development.

In Fresno County alone there are close 7,500 mobile homes, of those it is estimated that about 2,500 are not registered properly. This means those homeowners cannot sell their property, pass it along to a family member or even make repairs. Lyn Chelgren is a mobile homeowner of 16 years. He often makes changes to his property. For him proper registration is important.

"if you are not current, they are going to want you to bring the mobile home up to current registration before they ever issue a permit to do the work that may need to be done," said Chelgren.

Stanford said some of the reasons why people do not register are because they do not know they need to or in other cases people do not want to pay past due taxes and fees that have accumulated on their property. She said the program can save people hundreds to even thousands of dollars. To get started all you need to do is fill out an application.

"We are not here to check peoples citizenship status or send an inspector out to your property," said Stanford. "The only reason for this program is to help people register their homes."

The Department of Housing and Community Development will be in Visalia tomorrow at Self Help Enterprises from 3:30 P.M. until 7 P.M. On Wednesday they will be in Fresno at the Betty Rodriguez Library from 9 A.M. until noon. Afterwards, they will return to Clovis to the Woods Mobile Home Estates from 3 P.M. to 7 P.M.
