FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- A six-year-old boy is recovering after being hit by a Coalinga police car near Elm Avenue and Polk Street in Coalinga at about 7:30 p.m. on Thursday.

The accident happened near an Auto Zone when an officer was responding to a call. Authorities say he hit the child who was crossing the road and his patrol car ended up on the sidewalk.

It's unclear at this time how fast the officer was traveling, but he did have his lights on.

"Preliminary reports are he was accompanied by an adult and some other children. But we're still trying to investigate that," said Sgt. Zeke Rodriguez, California Highway Patrol.

Coalinga Police requested the CHP's assistance to handle the investigation. There was only one officer inside the car at the time.

Authorities on scene say the driver stepped on the breaks and tried taking corrective action.
