Tulare City Council bans medical marijuana
City officials made the move ahead of state legislation that would have gone into effect March 1, if the city did not come up with a plan of its own.

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- There's a new ban on medical marijuana in the south valley.

The Tulare City Council voted to ban commercial cultivation, transportation and sale of medical pot within city limits.

Two medical marijuana dispensaries will be allowed to remain in business, as long as they follow state and local regulations.

City officials made the move ahead of state legislation that would have gone into effect March 1 if the city did not come up with a plan of its own.

The new city ordinance takes effect February 19.
