Fresno police arrest driver in hit-and-run case that injured a nine-year-old boy
Fresno Police said the driver who hit a nine-year-old boy and left him injured in the street is in custody.

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Fresno Police said the driver who hit a nine-year-old boy and left him injured in the street is in custody. 28-year-old Danny McClain was arrested on Thursday after a three-week search.

When we first met Deshaun Mitchell, he was in the hospital with a shattered femur and a bruised lung. "I got hurt right here and all the way here," he said during an interview in January.

On January 22nd, Deshaun was crossing the street at California and Pottle in Fresno when police say a white SUV hit him and took off. He remembers pushing his little brother out of the way but didn't get a good look at the driver. Fortunately, there were witnesses. Sgt. Mark Hudson said, "The vehicle was identified and the vehicle has been impounded."

It took detectives nearly 3 weeks to track down the SUV and the owner, Danny McClain who investigators believe was the driver. Police say McClain was on probation for selling drugs and was arrested when he checked in with his probation officer. "McClain didn't try to run, he gave up," Sgt. Hudson added, "Officers there, they took him into custody to interview him and now he's been booked into the Fresno County jail for felony hit and run."

Deshaun's mom, Shawnnika Peters heard about the arrest a couple hours later and said she was thankful, "it took forever but we got there, we got everyone aware and everyone looking and talking about it and everyone helping and now the police are on their job."

Deshaun is at home recovering, still unable to walk but he'll start therapy soon with one less worry on his mind. "Now we have someone in custody so it's like, one step closer to having justice for Deshaun," Peters said.
