FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) --The growing popularity of craft beer has many in the California wine industry worried. Both the wine and beer industries have been raising a glass towards Millennials.
But an industry analyst said people 21 and over accounted for 35 percent of beer consumption while just 20 percent of wine consumption. Vino & Friends Bistro owner Chuck Van Fleet said, "The wine industry has to stay on top of what's going on obviously. Millennials are willing to try more craft beer."
The number of craft beer selections has expanded greatly at many stores.
Tommy Caprelian of the House of Pendragon in Clovis wasn't surprised more people were opting for craft beer. Caprelian explained, "They're just becoming more sophisticated with their palates."
Tommy said Millennials were always seeking something new. "With beer the options are limitless. Beyond grain, hops and yeast there's a whole plethora of ingredients you can use."
House of Pendragon will soon release a smoked coffee porter and a coconut ale. Tommy said, "It's more exciting I would say." Van Fleet said young adults seemed to be more interested in trying sweeter wines. He said, "We're not necessarily seeing all white zin but we are seeing a lot of fruit forward, a lot more fruity on the tongue. A little bit more Moscato."
But it's not an us vs. them situation because Van Fleet also served a dozen craft beers because of consumer demand. "It's a very important segment everybody is looking at."
Caprelian's dad has even talked about the craft beer trend.
Tommy said, "He just kind of joked with me and said hey you're taking a little of our market share away because we grow some wine grapes too." To meet the growing demand, House of Pendragon has expanded its brewing capabilities in Sanger and was expected to open up shop in downtown Fresno this summer.
