MADERA COUNTY (KFSN) -- A man is recovering in the hospital after being in a crash that left him with serious burns. The crash happened in Madera County on Highway 99 and Avenue Seven.

A big rig failed to slow down for the construction zone and ran into an SUV. That SUV then crashed into the car in front of it, went off the road and caught fire.

That driver was able to get out of the SUV but not before getting burned.

The driver of the car was also taken to the hospital with moderate injuries. "The Chrysler 300 traveled out of control after that first initial impact and ended up, essentially, making a u-turn and got sideswiped by the big rig and semi truck as well," said Lincoln McKenna, Madera area CHP Sergeant.

The northbound lanes of Highway 99 were backed up all the way to Shaw but are now back open.

The driver of the big rig was not hurt.

Police said alcohol does not appear to be a factor and no arrests have been made pending the investigation.
