FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) --The best female wrestlers in the state are in Visalia Friday and Saturday for the 6th annual state championships.
There are 24 participants and 14 different weight classes featured this weekend in the South Valley. Individual awards will be handed out as well as team awards. Enochs High School out of Modesto is the defending state champions.
Here the valley, Selma is arguably the best program and head coach Andy Munoz says this sport is growing with athletes coming from non-wrestling backgrounds. "I like teaching girls how to wrestle. Not all of them start off as wrestlers. I've trained girls who used to be a ballerina, cheerleader, softball players. I've trained them, they're from different sports. So, I just enjoy transforming them into a wrestling athlete as well." said Munoz.
Valencia's Gabby Garcia is seeking to become only the second girls wrestler in the state championship history to win four state titles.
