In the North Valley, a deadly big rig crash almost ended with the truck driving through an apartment complex.

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- In the North Valley, a deadly big rig crash almost ended with the truck driving through an apartment complex.

Investigators said the big rig careened off Highway 99, crashed through a concrete wall, then smashed into some parked cars.

The driver of the truck was killed and another man was also hurt.

"There wasn't any physical evidence to indicate that the driver took evasive action, just that the vehicle left the roadway and traveled down through the shoulder and then into the wall," said a CHP officer.

The truck came just feet from the apartment building and some people who live there said they've been concerned something like this would happen.

One resident of the apartment complex said, "It's definitely been something that we've been concerned about. We have hoped it would never come to life, but it has. Just hoping that some sort of precautions will be made."

Hazmat crews were called to the crash scene to clean up fuel that leaked onto the road.

No word on what may have caused the truck to go off the highway.
