FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Members of the Fresno County Sheriff's K-9 unit paid tribute to a longtime member of its force.

Sony died Tuesday from a stomach-turning condition that's deadly for dogs.

A flag draped the coffin containing his body was carried out of Sierra View Animal Hospital as fellow deputies watched. Afterwards, a procession followed as he was taken to the Fresno Pet Cemetery.

Sony became a member of the department in 2009 and for weeks underwent training with his partner.

"When you spend the amount of time that we do here with our dogs you build a bond, you build a relationship, and you build a working dog. And it's been an utter joy working with him," said Isaac Cervantes, Deputy Sheriff Fresno County Sheriffs Office.

Sony came from the Cezch Republic seven years ago and specialized in searching buildings and locating missing people.

He just celebrated his ninth birthday last month.
