FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- A fire broke out at a downtown Fresno home Saturday night.

Police say the fire started behind a house near Divisadero Avenue and Highway 41, just blocks away from Jefferson Elementary School, around 10:00 p.m.

The fire quickly spread into brush in the area, causing embers to fly and causing concern for firefighters who called in additional resources.

Firefighters are looking into the cause of the fire but a preliminary investigation has officials calling the fire suspicious.

A man returned to the burning home to rescue a pet and suffered minor smoke inhalation but is expected to be okay.
