Salvage yard catches fire in Downtown Fresno
Investigators said electronics that were being processed and stored near Highway 41 and Ventura overheated and caught fire, but crews were able to contain it fairly quickly.

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Investigators are calling a large fire in Downtown Fresno Sunday accidental.

It happened around 5:30 p.m. at a Salvation Army Salvage Yard near Highway 41 and Ventura Street.

Crews responded to thick black smoke in the area and were able to quickly contain the blaze.

Investigators said electronics that were being processed and stored overheated and caught fire.

Crews said that because of how the products were handled the blaze didn't turn into something bigger.

"There was not a whole lot of ways that could have been in place that might have prevented it," Don MacAlpine with the Fresno Fire Department said. "They had very good housekeeping going on which kept fire loss to a minimum, there were no permanent structures in the area, and, most importantly, there are no reported injuries at this time,"

Damage is estimated at $5,000 and investigators continue to review surveillance footage.
