Police believe a man who was killed while walking across Blackstone Avenue in Central Fresno was not in a cross walk.

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Police believe a man who was killed while walking across Blackstone Avenue in Central Fresno was not in a cross walk.

The man was hit around 10:30 last night near Princeton Avenue. Detectives say the man walked into the road and the driver couldn't stop in time.

The victim's name has not been released, but police say he's in his fifties.

"If he just would've crossed at the controlled intersection at Blackstone and Princeton, this may not have occurred at all. So ,we always recommend that people, especially when they're walking at night, and they're crossing major thoroughfares like Blackstone Avenue, use the controlled devices at intersections and use the crosswalks, because that's what they're there for, their safety," Lt. Dave Ramos, Fresno Police Department.

The driver is cooperating with the investigation - and is not expected to face charges.
