FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- A man was shot Monday night in Northeast Fresno, Fresno Police said.

Authorities said the shooting happened outside an apartment complex near San Jose and Fresno Avenues when a fight broke out between a large group of people around 9:30 p.m. One person fired a single shot, striking a man.

The victim was transported to Community Regional Medical Center in unknown condition.

"There was a lot of confusion early on," Lt. Mindy Casto with the Fresno Police Department said. "Officers had a lot of competing interests while attempting to secure the scene, gather evidence, contact witnesses and making sure we have a good status on the victim who is currently at the hospital. So, there are a lot of moving parts right now and there are a lot of officers on scene working to get to the very bottom of this."

Police describe the suspect as a bald man wearing a black shirt with gray shorts and may have took off in a red car.
