FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- A pregnant woman is in the hospital after being beaten and stabbed at a home in Southwest Fresno. Neighbors watched in shock, some saying they couldn't believe something like this could happen so close.

One neighbor said, "It's kinda scary because we have kids. The neighbors have kids-- so it's a good thing they weren't home."

Fresno Police were called to a double stabbing in Southwest Fresno Friday morning.

"This is an unusual case because you have two-- husband and wife-- that are seriously stabbed," said Lt. Joe Gomez, Fresno Police Department.

Inside, a roommate who they said is a witness, and Romiro Mendez who they, at first, thought was also a victim.

"He was stabbed all over his body, slice on his head, stabbed in the abdomen, other places too-- very bloody," said Gomez.

Mendez quickly went from being a victim to the main suspect when police found his two-month pregnant wife injured in the laundry room.

"She was stabbed lower body, both arms, been kicked in the face pretty bad. She was in there crying and asking for help," said Gomez.

A neighbor, who asked to not be identified, said this isn't the first police have been called to the home.

"My husband said don't park, don't come in the street it's blocked cause, you know, he did it again."

Police said the injuries do not seem to be life-threatening and the baby is uninjured. The suspect will be arrested for assault with a deadly weapon and felony domestic violence.

They also said a citizen did get involved when he saw the fight between the couple and stabbed Mendez . He then ran off after he was able to stop him.
