FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Dozens took part in a walk to help raise awareness for refugees impacted by the war in Syria.

The two-mile walk started at the Islamic Cultural Center where participants also had a traditional Arabic meal while listening to speakers upon their return.

The walk was led by a family who has recently settled in the Fresno area, which organizers say was a big deal in making them feel at home.

"It's very meaningful that the family has been able to join us in this event so I know it has a lot of meaning for them because they're feeling a part of our community and helping us reach out to their friends a family who are back home," Dr. Aimee Abu-Shamsieh said.

This year's proceeds went to the Syrian-American Medical Society who bring aid and care to the millions left displaced because of the violence overseas.
