FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Homicide detectives are worked late into the night investigating a murder in Northwest Fresno. It started when multiple shots rang out at the Enclave Apartments and came to a violent halt just feet away from Anthony Cervantes' family.

"Hey somebody hit your car. And we were like what?"

A black Mercedes rammed into his parked Chevy Impala. Fresno police said the driver was trying to get away from a shooting on the north side of the complex.

The victim was shot multiple times in his upper body.

"We do our best to keep a lid on violent crime, but people have free will, so sometimes we are left to respond and obviously officers were very close in the area and got here as quickly as they can," said Lt. Mindy Casto, Fresno PD.

Those officers tried to revive him but the victim died later at the hospital. The case quickly turned into a homicide investigation.

"Hopefully we'll be able to pick up enough clues and they will work around the clock to find the person responsible for this," said Casto.

Officers were still investigating late Wednesday night. Retrieving surveillance video and talking to witnesses.

Families lingered nearby relieved this time the bullets didn't hit any young targets.

"My niece plays out here a lot, the last thing I want to hear is something happened to them or somebody else," said Cervantes.

The victim hasn't been identified and as of this report, there is no suspect information.
