FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- A community church came together Saturday to help two correctional officers shot in the line of duty. More than 100 members of New Hope Church hosted "Backing of the Badges.

It was held in honor of officers Juanita Davila and Toamalama Scanlan who were wounded at the Fresno County Jail last month. The group put on their first ever drive-thru barbeque to raise funds to cover their medical expenses. The church hopes to do similar events like these in the future.

"As well as folks have responded to this today, there's always needs in the community and we want to make a difference to those around us and share the love of Christ and this gives us a way to do that," Pastor Tim Rolen said.

Both families say they are grateful for the love and support from the community. Davila was released from the hospital last week while Scanlan is slowly improving but remains in critical condition.
