MERCED, Calif. (KFSN) -- The Merced City School District held a groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday for a state of the art STEAM Center. STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math.

District officials said the center will offer modern, hands-on learning in those subjects and provide more opportunities for collaboration with UC Merced and other local colleges.

The facility is being built next to Ada Givens Elementary school in Merced.

"It's really unique for our area. Some school districts have different STEAM projects or STEAM centers, what makes this one unique it's that it's for all students. It's not an elite academy or something for a small number of students. It's for all the students in our district," said Sara Sandrik, MCSD Public Information Office.

The STEAM Center will also serve as a training facility for teachers.

The center is scheduled to be complete in May
