It's a big night for trick or treaters and it looks like the weather will cooperate for families Monday.

On Halloween, kids get to stay out a little later and let's not forget all the free candy. It's sure to be a fun night, but everyone wants to make it a safe night.

Trick or treating is the highlight for any kid on Halloween but going door-to-door can also be dangerous if they're not careful.

"The kids have a tendency to run house to house," Sgt. Robert Gonzales with the Fresno Police Department said. "Just keep aware for motorists, it's a good time for them to go out and trick or treat but we also want to make sure they get home safe."

Going door-to-door is slowly becoming a thing of the past and many families are opting for Trunk or Treat-type Halloween festivals rather than getting candy from neighbors.

"What I recommend people doing is going to your churches your schools those types of functions," Gonzales said. "So, you know where you're going and it's a safer environment - less motorists around, it's all in a restrictive area."

Alexindria Riley worries about the safety of her little ones on Halloween. So, she's planning on taking advantage of her neighborhood's block party.

"Our community is gated and closed in so it's more comfortable for us as parents and the kids to keep an eye on them," she said. "We will not be participating in the door to door in the community but we will be doing our own little thing."

When it comes to costumes, try to choose a light-colored one so your child can be seen at night. Glow sticks or flashlights are also important items to remember this Halloween.

"Costumes, making sure they're some type of reflector on the back for little ones even for adults," Gonzales said. "And if you're going to be in the roadway, there's no sidewalks. Make sure you walk towards the traffic so you're facing traffic so you're aware of what's going on."
