FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- A man in his 70s is dead after being hit by a car in Fresno County Saturday night.

The California Highway Patrol said the man had walked across the street to get mail near Herndon and Academy Avenues when he turned back across the street to go home when they said he was struck by a car traveling eastbound.

Officials are urging people in rural areas to be extra careful during hours of darkness.

"Anytime you're out in these rural areas, in these county pockets, there's no lights out here to light the roadway," Sgt. Manuel Peregrina with the CHP said. "You always got to take for granted that there might be a pedestrian out here."

The CHP said the driver had his headlights on and he wasn't under the influence. The driver did have minor injuries from shattered glass but was not taken to the hospital.

Authorities don't plan on citing or arresting that driver.
