CHP urges people to drive safely during holiday commute

MERCED, Calif. (KFSN) -- The California Highway Patrol wants you to stay alert when on the road, and officers have some tips on how to stay safe while getting back home.

Millions of cars are now back on the road and on the way home after the Thanksgiving holiday. However, with some rain on its way to the Central Valley and some snow expected up in the mountains, the CHP says drivers need to check the forecast before starting their drive.

"Make sure you can go over and check your vehicle, make sure its got proper tire tread, make sure the lighting is operating properly and windshield wipers are functioning," Sgt. Steven Lewis with the CHP explained.

Lewis said the department will be out in full force and will make sure roads signs during the extreme weather are constantly updated.

"The highway patrol will be updating signage as needed so if you find yourself going into an area that starts saying that chains are required, the chains signs will be flipped around," he said.

Some drivers say they're ready for whatever comes their way.

"I've had to chain up the truck and the trailer, so I'm prepared if we hit it," driver Jason Smith said.

To avoid getting stuck in the worst of the traffic, Google says to avoid leaving Saturday at 4 p.m. And for those wanting to head to Yosemite to burn those Thanksgiving calories, remember to carry chains for your tires and that the Tioga and Glacier Point roads are now closed for snow.
