Homeowner shot by robbery suspect in Exeter
Police say two tall men wearing masks made their way inside an Exeter home early Thursday morning, possibly through an open garage door.

EXETER, Calif. (KFSN) -- Police say two tall men wearing masks made their way inside an Exeter home early Thursday morning, possibly through an open garage door. But before long, they were confronted by the couple who lives there, and had been sleeping.

Police said there was a struggle, and then one of the suspects shot the male homeowner in the arm.

"The homeowners grabbed their own firearm, retreated to the bedroom, called and waited for us to arrive," said Cliff Bush, Exeter Police Chief.

The shooting victim was brought to a hospital and is expected to be okay. By late Thursday morning, the scene was clear in this quiet neighborhood on the city's Westside as police continued their search for the suspects.

"Definitely a high priority, and we are like I said, actively pursuing every lead we can and looking into anything that we can that will give us some kind of details or leads to the suspects," said Lt. Liz Yarber, Exeter Police Department.

Police said there is no indication that the suspects and homeowners knew each other and that the couple has only lived in this house for a short time.

"They did take property from the residence, we still have yet to confirm what property was taken and we're still actively pursuing some leads," said Yarber.
