Woman allegedly stabbed by own son inside Southwest Fresno home
Police say other family members intervened during the attack, and the family reported that the suspect may have mental health issues.

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- The Fresno Police Department is investigating a stabbing in southwest Fresno Saturday night after a woman was allegedly attacked by her own son.

The stabbing took place on Lemon and Thorne Avenues, near the Chandler Airport, around 8:30 p.m. Investigators said the 56-year-old victim was inside her home when she was stabbed from behind with a butcher's knife.

Police say other family members intervened during the attack, and the family reported that the suspect may have mental health issues.

"She was making dinner, the son comes up behind her and begins to stab her," Lt. Jerardo Chamalbide said. "The motive for the stabbing, we don't know yet, but they did tell us they were having mental problems with the son over the past two years."

The woman was transported to Community Regional Medical Center and is expected to recover. Police arrested the 36-year-old suspect and are investigating what led up to the incident.

The identity of the suspect and victim has not been released.
