VISALIA, Calif. (KFSN) -- Late Wednesday afternoon, Visalia Police announced they made an arrest in a deadly shooting. Two victims were walking down a street late Tuesday night when someone shot and killed a woman-- the man she was with is now in critical condition.

"The first thing I heard was my wife waking me up saying there was some gunshots that were going off. So I got up, looked out, someone was pounding on my door I, at this point, said call 911," said Chuck Glenn of Visalia.

Glenn did not open his door but his neighbor across the street Brenzon Martell came out of his house.

"I woke up to seven or eight gunshots last night, and I walked outside, saw a guy banging on his door and then I asked him to lie down. And then, by that time, I looked over here at this SUV and there was someone laying down deceased in the front of it."

The man Martell told to get down had been shot several times.

Martell said the man was shot in his back, his buttocks, and his leg and said the victim was saying, "She screwed me over the whole time, that's what he was repeating."

The woman the wounded man was apparently referring to was in the street, dead. Shot in the chest by another man police said ran from the scene.

"They found out the male and female were on foot, both walking through the area on Encina, when they were approached by a male subject also on foot who fired several shots at them before running south on Encina," said Damon Maurice, Visalia Police.

Glenn did not see the shooting, but another neighbor who witnessed the crime told him, "The guy took off running and as he was running he was shooting back at the guy and he hit the girl."

Police say the woman who died was 41-years-old, the wounded man is 51. He's in critical condition at a local hospital. Police have detained one man for questioning, but can't say if he is a suspect, or why the couple was shot.

"We do not believe this was a random act, we believe the victims were targeted in this situation," said Maurice.

Names of the victims have not been released.
