The Central California Asthma Collaborative is raising awareness about asthma. It will hold a 5K Bubble Fun Run for Asthma Awareness on June 10th.

Asthma prevalence is on the rise. 1 in 5 children in the Central Valley has asthma. It is the leading cause of school absences in the valley.

The state average is 17.1% and Fresno County has 23.6% of asthma prevalence for children ages 5-17.

Air quality, pesticides, the geography, diesel trucks, ag wood burning, chimney wood burning, genetics all play a role in asthma development.

Asthma symptoms include shortness of breath, wheezing, coughing, congestion, chest pressure and tightness, dizziness, not being able to speak.

Asthma triggers include dust mites, cockroach feces, pet dander, pollen, strong odors (perfume, hairspray, chemical cleaners), smoke and stress.

Parents can help their children by keeping a healthy home environment by:

- Limiting the amount of chemicals you use to clean your home or use green cleaning products.

- Have proper ventilation in your home.

- Keep pets off your bed and out of your room.

- Wet dust daily - get a warm wet cloth and wipe down counter tops - helps kill dust mites

- Invest in hypoallergenic bedding

- Know the Air Quality using - Real-time advisory network app on your phone
