2 H1N1 deaths reported in Fresno County

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Two flu deaths were reported Friday in Fresno County and the Fresno Department of Public Health is calling them unusual.

Both deaths were reported within a week of each other. The victims are both residents of Fresno County, no sex or approximate age information is available. The department says flu season lasts from October to May with February being a peak month.

And they say this year they've actually seen a weak flu season.

They say they're calling these deaths unusual because deaths are typically reported in early January and because both victims died from the H1N1 strand which is already included in this year's vaccine. "We had the H1N1 strain included in the vaccine and most of the individuals in the ICU are due to because of the H1N1," Leticia Berber with the health department explained.

There is no word on whether the victims had received the vaccine. The health department is encouraging everyone to get vaccinated.

Vaccines are free at the health department.
