FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Family members are friends are still reeling from the death of Giovanni Ohano. The two-year-old drowned in a pool Tuesday night after somehow getting away from his dad's nearby apartment.

The pool was locked up with a chain, but police said Ohano got through the wrought iron fence. Neighbors said everyone did it before the county posted signs saying it is illegal and the complex boarded it up Wednesday.

"This pool's always been, they're all actually broken through the bars and stuff-- we don't even use the door, we use this entry right here. So, it's easy access for kids," said Rosalinda Lopez, neighbor.

Lopez even got inside to start a small shrine to Ohano after he died Tuesday. Police are still investigating the circumstances of the drowning, especially since the first person who tried to help the boy found him not even in the pool.

"CPR was being performed by an adult who was there and saw the child lying outside of the pool. So, we don't know at this point how the child got out of the pool," said Lt. Mark Hudson, Fresno Police Department.

Investigators questioned witnesses at the scene, but they are still looking for more. One person who wasn't there was Ohano's mother. Family members said she got the tragic news at work late Tuesday night.

"She's been working, get a phone call, she's hysterical, her heart's broken," said a family friend.

We reached out to apartment management, but have not gotten any response yet. But the Fresno County Health Department tells us they initially ordered the pool shut down one month ago.
