Northwest Fresno farmers market helping fund gear for student athletes

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Fruits and vegetables are helping Fresno students excel in sports, but not because of vitamins and fiber.

All signs point to produce on the streets of northwest Fresno, and the Bullard High School Farmers Market is open for business and students are selling the freshest of fruits and vegetables.

Parents may have grown some of the products on the sales table, but students with the school's Drive Club also collected produce from Simonian Farms and First Quality Produce. And customers of all ages say the price is right for what they needed.

"Some nectarines, apricots - which my wife loves - zucchini, and blackberries and corn," John Carey of Fresno said. "And it's all a really good buy."

And the weekend work is designed as a way to give back to fellow Fresno Unified students who need a hand to keep up in extracurricular activities.

"The proceeds go to kids that are in need and needing sporting items, like baseball shoes, soccer shoes, baseball gloves, bats," Mark Topoozian with the farmers market said.

So far, it's been a home run. In their second week, they've already bagged dozens of repeat customers.

The farmers market runs from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. every Saturday through July.
