Unique Fresno program on the move to help fill kids bellies and hearts during summer vacation

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Not far from the train tracks and everyday crime, the sounds of children playing fill an area of the Sands Motel.

"It might not be our biggest site, but it's our biggest impact," said Morgan Terry, Fresno EOC.

This is one of Fresno EOC's free summer food programs.

"We're the first organization to offer mobile routes for the summer food service program, and the routes on motel drive hit Parkway Inn, Travel Inn, and Sands Hotel here," said Terry.

That's right-- the food is coming to these kids thanks to the volunteers with Live Again Fresno. About 45 meals are served at breakfast and lunch during the week.

"Now that they're home every day it makes it that much harder. To team up with the EOC to meet that need, where they are is huge," said Richard Burrell, Live Again Fresno.

Burrell started Live Again Fresno-- the volunteers get to know kids and take them out on field trips beyond their motel boundaries.

"We never want to see these young folks tied up in gangs stuff or sex trafficking stuff that goes on in neighborhoods like this."

Fresno EOC said it is also working out on the street to provide a sanctuary for at risk youth.

"We get them access that they need, whether it is food, hygiene, whether it's to take a shower, or housing. Depending on the situation of our youth whether they are runaways, homeless, or being trafficked," said Cesar Casamayor, Outreach Worker.

Though life may be tough, this daily meal provides a safe place and safe spot for some of Fresno's youth.

"If you look around out here, I'd call it third world conditions and its five miles from where the rest of us are living. So anything we can do to help. I don't want the life I get knowing this is here down the street," said Terry.
