SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- A bill that would allow local communities across California to extend alcohol sales hours past two a.m. is closer to becoming law.

An assembly committee easily approved the legislation Wednesday.

The bill, by San Francisco State Senator Scott Weiner, would extend drinking hours to 4 a.m. in bars, nightclubs and restaurants, but not liquor stores. It now heads to the assembly appropriations committee.
