Tulare, Kings, and Fresno counties head back to school
FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Central Unified welcomed back almost 16,000 students to their 24 schools. District wide, schools are staying true to this year's theme of "scaling up the impact".
"One of the things we want to make sure they know is that giving back to the community and making a positive impact in everything that they do is so very important," said Mark Sutton, Central Unified Superintendent.
Students got a warm welcome to campus and those at Tilley Elementary got a hard hat welcome. The district broke ground on a permanent facility for the elementary school last month.
"Its classrooms that we desperately need now were a growing district and it'll help us with accommodating all of our students," said Sutton.
Currently accommodating 400 students, Tilley Elementary will more than double the amount of students when construction is complete January 2019. In addition, there will be a new language arts program for grades T-k to 11. New programs include extra support for teachers, faculty and staff.
"We've already started a lot of professional development training in English language arts math programs and cooperative learning as well," said Sutton.
Once allocated local and state money comes in-- the district plans to start construction of a new high school.
"We'll have separate high schools-- separate boundaries and that's something were going to work on over the next couple of years before the high school opens," said Sutton.
The board will decide whether to consolidate the Central High east and west campuses or have three high schools in the district. The school boundaries will be drawn for the projected start of the 2021 school year.
